Delta
Dart Convair F-102 and Fairchild 24
|
The Delta Dart is taken from August 1959 Model Airplane News. Thanks to Zoe Quilter for making it available on his web site, www.fuelsoaked.me.uk Windy Sock is not familiar with the state of the art but we do see considerable interest developing in jet power, and there is a current substitute for the Jetex 50 power unit called for in the article. Also, the discussion of the "area rule" and corresponding "coke bottle design," and "conical camber" is very interesting and will have a place in hangar flying even if you don't build the model. The Fairchild 24 was chosen for its simplicity and potential for good flying characteristics. Thanks to Claude Powell for providing it. Bamboo is called for in the wing tips and tail outlines; of course, laminated balsa strips can be substituted, but bamboo is surprisingly easy to form with heat, and it should be possible to use bamboo chopsticks, widely available, cut into strips - 1/32"x1/16" should be strong enough in lieu of the 1/16" square specified.. And why not start out with a 1/16"x1/8" leading edge instead of wishing you had it as you patch up break after break? Install it flat. The two color schemes shown below will make the model stand out, we think, from amidst the many 24's flying out there. And while you won't need that beautiful view of the cabin for this Dime Scale-class model, it could come in handy for an electric powered model that you take to Geneseo. But failing in that, it was just too beautiful a view to pass up, so here it is. Enjoy! Go to Plan
